DISTURBANCES

A bridge in sunlight. The river's broken finger
points to the past. There's no-one here,

just images of people who were nearly friends.
Hallucinations. A collection of shadows:

the water, deep as leaf mould, condensing.
Our gestures conceal an emptiness . . . pointless

decoration, these guarded descriptions. Each span
of the bridge is splashed with light.
